The Road to Bryce

This post is about the road to Bryce Canyon, but I have to start by talking about our Airbnb in Salt Lake City. This place was great, we loved it. My favorite part is that it has the Harvard Classics Five Foot Bookshelf!!

This was perfect for me; I couldn’t believe it. I perused it for a little while, and it is in mint condition. It is a 1967 printing. Basically, I fell in love with it. I have not seen anything better in an Airbnb, ever. 0000

Okay, we can move on now. Chris, Lori, and Emily all arrived on Wednesday and spent the night at our Airbnb, and yes they had to listen to me rave about the bookshelf. We checked out Thursday morning and hit the road, heading to Bryce Canyon. Emily and Lucas went in Lucas’ truck, while Kristin, Lori, Chris, and I all went in our new rental, a Dodge Durango (we needed more room than the Jeep).

I always say that you need to be careful in Rhode Island because all of their speed limits are 5 MPH lower than Massachusetts. If a residential neighborhood is 30 MPH in Mass, then it will be 25 MPH in RI. Well, in Utah, it seems like all the speed limits are double what they would be in Massachusetts (at least outside of the city). If a road has a limit of 40 MPH in Mass, you can likely do 80 in Utah - it’s crazy. They have ordinary two-lane roads with one lane in each direction and a yellow centerline, where the speed limit is 70. That is the norm. At first it was difficult for me to even drive the speed limit; it felt so foreign. But you get used to it quickly, and soon I was doing 80 the whole way. If I ever get pulled over for speeding in Massachusetts, I’m going to tell the cop I just got back from Utah, and if he has any experience with Utah he will completely understand.

The good thing is that the roads out here are super smooth and you can see for about 10 miles in all directions. I think the only thing you have to worry about is some wildlife jumping out in front of you. At one point, we did have a family of deer crossing the road, but fortunately I could spot them from a mile away.

We took a little detour to visit Fish Lake and see the world’s largest living organism along the way. The organism is Pando a stand of aspen trees that are all connected or cloned or something like that. I don’t understand all this sciency stuff, but its pretty cool.

0003 We’re definitely in the mountains now.

We made it to Fish Lake. I think all those aspen trees are part of the pango.

And here comes Lucas and Emily.

We spent some time just hanging out at the lake, it is gorgeous here, and it was another perfect day weather-wise.

Ya always gotta skip some rocks, just like back at Fulton’s Pond.

After leaving Fish Lake, we continued on our journey. It is a long drive from Salt Lake City to the Bryce Canyon area, especially when you stop at Fish Lake. We were all wearing down when we saw a sign for Butch Cassidy’s boyhood home! What great luck! We had to stop to check that out.

Chief and Chris fell asleep in the house, then got surrounded by some ornery lawmen and their posse. They ended up having to shoot their way out. Where the heck is Chavez with the horses?!?

After that we finally made our way to our Airbnb in Hatch. It was a long drive, but we got there okay.
