Air Show
On Saturday we went with Lucas to an air show in Spanish Fork.
Two of Lucas’ friends are training to become pilots and they told Lucas about the air show. We met them there and the five of us watched some pretty nifty flying.
At the show, there were a lot of different attractions. They had old World War II airplanes that you could walk around and look at. There was a classic car show as well, with dozens of classic cars. I realized that at my age a “classic” car is just one that your friends or parents used to drive when you were younger, so that was eye-opening. There were also exotic cars. They even had a race track set up where you could go with a professional driver to put your car through its paces on the track to the sound of screeching tires and the smell of burning rubber. However, the main attraction was the flying, and the best showing in that category was when two World War II era military planes simulated a dogfight right over us. One was an American B-25 bomber, the same kind used during the famous “Doolittle Raid” on Tokyo in the early days of the war in the Pacific. The other was a classic Japanese Zero fighter.
The B-25 started dropping bombs on the airfield! There were big explosions with massive fireballs. It was quite an elaborate show.
Uh-oh, here comes the Zero, looking for the bomber.
And the duel is on!
The mountains serve as a dramatic backdrop for the air battle.
It looked a little grim for the B-25, but this is America! We prevailed in World War II, and the American B-25 would prevail here today, too.
