Antelope Island
Kristin and I drove the Jeep outt to Antelope Island which sits in the Great Salt Lake and is connected to the mainland by a causeway. We stopped along the causeway to get a pick, but as soon as we stopped and I got ready to get out, the Jeep was swarmed by mosquitos. I’ll do a lot of things to get a shot, but I wasn’t opening that door. So we continued on to the island. Apparently the Great Salt Lake is more like the Great Salt Swamp.
The island is large, about 15 miles long running north to south, and is inhabited by herds of bison. We started out heading west once on the island, driving past the visitor center and along the beaches which sit on the northwest side of the island. I thought about going for a swim, but the lake was low and so would have required a long walk through the marsh and those clouds of mosquitoes, so I passed on that. On this side we saw herds of bison and encountered some right along the road, one even crossed the road in front of us.
Then we backtracked and drove down the east coast of the island, driving until the pavement ended, and about a mile or two down the dirt road before turning around. On the way back, we finally saw a few antelope.
Some landscape photos from the west side of the island.
These are the golden grasses that bring the bison here.
It is like a scene straight out of the Old West.
In the background you can see the causeway that connects Antelope Island to the mainland.
That’s our rented Jeep, thanks for the free upgrade Avis.
Finally, on the drive back, almost to the entrance, I spotted an antelope.
At the end, we quickly went back to the west side, and this guy was hanging out near the beach parking lot.
